#6 Mary's Cafe - Strawn, Texas

When you live your whole life in Texas, over the years, you hear about places you should visit.  Often, they're off the beaten path and you read about them in Texas Highways or Texas Monthly.  Friends and colleagues are sometimes the source of these hidden

treasures and will ask, "Have you been to . . .?  You have to go and try the . . . "  Mary's Cafe in Strawn, Texas, is one of these jewels.  I'd heard about it for years and knew it had to go on my 50 by 50 list.  When I first compiled my list earlier this Spring, I had tentatively planned on heading to Mary's the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend.  But then it rained all month long and the forecast showed the rain continuing into that weekend.  But miraculously, the rain decide to head elsewhere, and Saturday morning I decided I would head to Strawn for what is deemed as the world's best chicken fried chicken.

The quickest route is 90 minutes via I-20.  It promised to be a beautiful day and the thought of all highway wasn't very appealing so I considered my other options.  Thanks to Google Maps, I discovered a much more scenic, albeit longer drive.

In the end it was totally worth it.  For one thing, it took me through a part of my school district I had never been to before.  It gave me an even greater appreciation for how widespread we are and how different the various corners of our district are.  My route was mostly Farm-to-Market roads and after almost month of rain, the drive was green and lush, full of wildflowers. Although there were clouds, the sun proved to be more stubborn and it was a gorgeous, sunny day to drive this section of Texas with the sunroof open singing along to the classic country playing on the radio.  And by classic, I mean country music of the 80s and 90s . . . you know the good stuff.

Mary's Cafe did not disappoint.  It is the quintessential small town cafe.  The front is busy, but not too busy to be greeted as soon as you walk in and you're directed to seat yourself.  Decor is simple and what you would expect; neon signs and local photography sporadically adorn the walls.  Even at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, Mary's had a steady stream of diners, keeping the waitstaff constantly on the go.  My server was a long timer.  I overheard her say she had been working at Mary's since 2003.  And that was the second time she worked there.  The first time was 1993!  Now that is loyalty!

Even though Mary's Cafe is known to have the world's best chicken fried steak, I've always been more of a chicken fried chicken girl.  But if the chicken is any indication, then Mary's just might have a legit claim to this title.  The chicken was tender and juicy, and the breading was just thick enough to have the perfect crunch.  The gravy was thick and creamy and not too peppery; a great compliment to the chicken fried chicken.  But don't worry, if you're not a gravy person, the chicken fried chicken definitely stands on its own.   The meal also came with toast, a salad and your choice of mashed potatoes, fries, or baked potato.  Let's get the salad out of the way.  Yes, I got one and even requested balsamic vinaigrette in an attempt to make good choices.  I even took a couple of bites.  But let's be real.  I just drove two hours for a  Southern classic . . . do I really want to take up space with a salad?  And it's a salad made with shredded lettuce.  If you've read my Burger Babe posts, you know how I feel about shredded lettuce.  It is good for tacos only.  The toast was perfectly buttered and lightly toasted, which is my preference.  I wasn't super excited about the masked potatoes.  I don't mind potato chunks, but I would rather my mashed potatoes be a little smoother and creamier.

Because I knew I would regret it if I didn't, I ordered fried green tomatoes and a slice of coconut meringue pie to go.

Even though I was still full when I got home, I tried a tomato right away.  Delicious!  I plan on having the rest for brunch after I'm done with this post.  But I couldn't put off the pie!  Just look at that filling to meringue ratio.  It can't get any better.  And that crust!  Flaky in all the right ways.  This pie was perfection.  I think I might even place it above the Koffee Kup's out in Hico!

So a fun bonus to share with you.  When I pulled into downtown Strawn, population 680, I found myself driving on red brick roads.  To most people, this wouldn't mean a thing.  But it immediately took me back to Randolph, Nebraska, where my maternal grandparents lived when I was a child.  Interestingly enough, Strawn and Randolph are about the same size and about the same population.  I'm assuming that like Randolph, Strawn is a farming community, but I don't know that for sure.   I haven't been to Randolph in years, but I hope those red brick roads are still running through town.

I'm so glad I practiced spontaneity yesterday.  The drive out to Strawn was gorgeous and the destination worth it.

#5 Emapandas!

Over the course of the pandemic, I've learned about several local restaurants that have intrigued me Del Campo Empanadas is one of those I'd been hearing about so I decided to give them a try this past week.  And boy, am I glad I did!

A word of advice.  Study the menu before you walk in.  All of the choices looked so amazing and it was a super hard decision.  I ended up getting three savory empanadas.  I figured one would make a fantastic breakfast option the next day.  Starting from the top left and going clockwise - Caprese, Beef Classic, and Shrimp.  (That's a container of chimichurri for dipping - yum!)  I didn't even look at the daily special.  I knew I needed to start with the basics.  The shrimp was probably my favorite, but I'm telling you, you can't go wrong with any of these three for sure!  And I'm willing to bet all of the other choices are just as fabulous.

For dessert, I grabbed the Banutella empanadas.  I love that I got two, thinking I would save one for the next day.  But I just couldn't help myself and they were both gone before I went to bed that night.

Del Campo is in north Fort Worth, at Beach and Golden Triangle.  They are a small, local business and super friendly.  The employee was so patient with me as I struggled with my decision-making.  I hope you'll pay them a visit and make them a family favorite.

#4 Bondi Bowls

One of the benefits to this pandemic is that my neighborhood, like so many, has started inviting food trucks to come set up for dinner.  As a fan of food trucks and a supporter of local businesses, I try to take advantage when there's one that sounds interesting.  Plus, hello!  That's one night I'm not in the kitchen, so it's a win-win for everyone.

A few weeks ago, the Bondi Bowl truck rolled into Rolling Meadows and I'm so glad I was feeling adventurous.  Normally, I don't know that a vegan food truck would have excited me, but the food is fresh, simple and healthy; I am excited for them to come back to my area.  So many wonderful options, but I went with their namesake, the Bondi Bowl - an acai bowl topped with strawberries, blueberries, bananas, and homemade vegan granola (and maybe drizzled with a touch of Nutella).  I ordered a small because you, know first time and all, but with my first bite I was regretting that decision.  It was so incredibly delicious and filling.  I could have easily devoured the larger size.  The acai part was my new adventure.  I hadn't had it before but I am a fan of this super food.  If I'm feeling super adventurous, then next time I will get a dragon fruit bowl instead.

If the Bondi Bowl truck rolls into your neighborhood, or you frequent the Keller Farmers Market, stop by and get a bowl of yummy goodness.  Check their schedule here or follow them on Instagram.

#3 Eighter Food Truck Challenge

I love a good food truck!  So why wouldn't I want to attend Decatur's 5th Annual Eighter Food Truck Challenge with Cindy?  And it was such a fabulous day!  Temps in the low 80s with just the right amount of cloud cover to keep things cool. There were probably about 12 trucks at the Wise County Fairgrounds each with a signature dish.  After buying our tickets, we walked the line of trucks to consider our options and come up with a game plan.  Here's what I finally settled on.

Burnt End Tacos from Willett's BBQ

The Caribbean from Chriseli’s Latin Food Truck - rice & beans with sweet plantains & avocado with guava sauce

Chicken Bacon Ranch Potato from Kousin’s Potatoes
Mushroom Bacon Swiss Burger from Big Kat Burgers

Korean BBQ Confit Duck Bao from Blind Fox

Pecan Praline Cheesecake from Addie Cake and Lily Pie
Blueberry Cheesecake Doughnut from Doughnut Snob

My favorite dish was The Caribbean and my favorite sweet was the Blueberry Cheesecake Doughnut.  The big winner of the day was Blind Fox's Korean BBQ Confit Duck Bao with Lotus, Cilantro, Mint & Basil.  That one was super yummy with all sorts of fun flavors & textures. The Pecan Praline Cheesecake won the best sweet.

#2 Eggsiquisite

My first new restaurant of my #50by50 challenge was a breakfast spot in Southlake called Eggsiquisite.  I met my bestie there for a late breakfast.  We actually ate there way back in late March, I just forgot to write about it.  I didn't think to take pics, but I promise, it did really happen.  I do remember that I got the Bacado omelet - bacon, spinach, tomatoes, and baby Swiss cheese, topped with sliced avocado.  Yes, it was as delicious as it sounds.  All those flavors coming together!  Yum!  What a great way to start the day and my challenge of 50 new experiences by the time I celebrate 50 next March.

#1 Lavender Ridge Farm

The first thing I did to kick off my year of new adventures and experiences was to visit Lavender Ridge Farm in Gainsville, Texas, with my sweet friend, Sandra.  I had heard about this place for a few years and been wanting to visit, so Spring Break seemed like the perfect chance.  Because it was mid-March, nothing was really in bloom yet.  But we picked up some fabulous plants to bring back home for the yard as well as some lavender scented goodies.  In addition to lavender, there were goats, chickens, and lemurs to be had.  And a trip to Lavender Ridge Farm wouldn't be complete without a glass of Lavender Tea.  I'd like to go back in June when the lavender is in bloom.  Can you imagine walking through a field of it and picking your own to take home? Exciting!

While it wasn't a new experience, Sandra and I did venture over to
Blue Ostrich Winery & Vineyard in St. Jo to enjoy a beautiful spring afternoon tasting wine and enjoying the view.  It was a good reminder that new experiences are meant to be fun and even educational, but what's more important are the people you share an experience with.

50 is Right Around the Corner

A few days after my 48th birthday, the world shut down to the Covid-19 pandemic.  To say the least, it's been a challenging year for everyone.  We've done work and school from home in ways that we've never imagined.  We put our life on hold, not going to restaurants to be with friends, movie theaters shuttered and live events a distant memory.  In the Fall, we reopened schools with very stringent protocols in place, but much of our social life remained at a standstill.  As 2020 turned into 2021, the promise of a vaccine buoyed our spirits with the thought that there was a light at the end of the tunnel.  Shortly before my 49th birthday, I was fortunate enough to receive my second vaccine.  This past year has given me plenty of time to be reflective about past and thoughtful of the future.  Since 50 is considered a milestone birthday and we seem to be at the end of the pandemic, I want to make the year leading up to 50 a year of new experiences and adventures.  My goal is to have 50 new experiences over the next year and a half.  I don't want to got to my 50th birthday in March and be like ok, that's it.  I want this year leading up to and the months following this monumental occasion to be full of adventures and new things in my life.  I'm still working on my list, but here's what I've got so far.

Let's start with Fort Worth.  I've lived here for 5 years and have yet to really explore Cowtown.  It's a great city with so many fun things to do.  It seems like the perfect time to learn what all it has to offer.

I am from DFW.  I grew up in Farmers Branch and have always considered myself a Dallasite.  But there are a few things I'm embarrassed to admit I have yet to do on that side of the Metroplex either.

And all around DFW there are interesting things to see and do:

Beyond DFW, there are some other things I've told myself will happen over the next year.
  • Visit the Bush Presidential Library at Texas A&M and the LBJ Library at UT (actually I'd like to go to all of the presidential libraries, but let's start small)
  • Visit a part of Texas I've never been to, so this summer, I'm headed to West Texas!  And I've got a lot of new experiences planned for that trip.  I can't wait to share it with you.
I'd also like to visit a state AND a country I've never been to.  I'm thinking that will be in 2022.  Let me know if you've got any suggestions.
  • Headed to the Dominican Republic in June 2022 with my college roomies
  • Going to Cabo for Spring Break 2022
But I also want to do & learn new things, not just visit a new place.
  • Make a pie from scratch, including the crust
  • Knit or crochet
  • Different lettering styles
  • Heartwork Journaling
  • Volunteer Deputy Registrar
  • Walk a 5K
A part of my new experiences include going to new restaurants (that is one thing I have really missed during the pandemic . . .  Door Dash just isn't the same).  The are so many phenomenal restaurants out there . . . DFW is home to some amazing chefs!  So I'm going to try really hard to avoid chains this year and eat at local restaurants that are new to me.  I've got a list started if you want to check it out.  And if you've got some ideas for me, let me know here.

I'm also continuing on my journey to be healthier.  In October, I started my Lose 50 lbs. by 50 journey and I'm excited to say I'm almost there.  I've lost 35 pounds and have 15 to go.  Once I hit the milestone, I'll decide how I feel and if that's a good place for me to be.

I've already done a couple of these things; be looking for an update soon.  If you have an idea for me that you think I would like, or maybe even something that will challenge me and help me grow, I hope you'll share your ideas with me.
